Turn a business problem into a linear optimization model: choose the decision variables, write the objective, translate each requirement into a constraint, and let Solver do the rest. Then trade off two objectives on a Pareto frontier. MBA 60310, Optimization module.
Joy versus cost: the Pareto frontier
The restaurant order now has two goals: more joy and less money spent. No single order is best at both. An order is Pareto-optimal if nothing else gives more joy for the same or less money. Every possible order is a point in the shaded region; the frontier is its upper edge.
Each run solves: maximize joy subject to cost ≤ budget. Recording the optimum for every budget traces the whole frontier.
Solves: maximize joy − λ × cost (no budget). λ is how many units of joy one dollar is worth to you. The dashed line is the objective at the optimum.
